Coming Home & Chiropractic: Meet Dr. Balestrieri

By

Dr. BalestrieriDr. Balestrieri, a Southwest Virginia native, always knew she wanted to care for others by pursuing a career in healthcare. In many ways, we have her parents to thank for that. Her mom was an OB/GYN nurse and her step-dad, Ralph, is a physiatrist. As a child, Dr. Balestrieri (just Michelle at that time) would accompany Ralph on his hospital rounds, learning something new each and every time. In fact, Ralph would often quiz her to make sure she was really paying attention. As Michelle got older the questions became more difficult and she relished in her ability to “crack the case” for Ralph when it came to the problems his patients faced.
Since it was clear healthcare was going to be part of Michelle’s future she pursued a pre-med educational path at Virginia Tech.  She knew this foundation would give her a well-rounded education and provide the perfect springboard for whatever was next, even if she wasn’t quite sure what healthcare discipline it would be. After shadowing a number of doctors from a variety of specialties, she still had yet to have an “ah-ha” moment about the right path forward. It was during her “Careers in Medicine” class that it all became clear.
It just so happened that Dr. Ray Tuck gave a presentation in Michelle’s class about chiropractic as a healthcare career choice. Michelle’s interest was piqued and she followed up with the presentation by arranging a shadowing experience with Dr. Rathmann. She recalls, “I loved how patients were excited about their appointments and left feeling great.” She noted that Dr. Rathmann, “had a great rapport with her patients and I loved the dynamic in the office.” After that, the path was clear. She knew chiropractic was calling her.
After Michelle graduated magna cum laude from Virginia Tech she pursued her Doctorate in Chiropractic (DC) from the National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, Illinois. Her experience in DC school was anything but a boring one. Dr. Balestrieri recalls, “During clinicals, I spent almost a year adjusting young fighters at a boxing gym and the fighters at MMA events.” How about that for a colorful chiropractic experience? Not only was her experience interesting, her dream was achieved; Michelle became Dr. Michelle Balestrieri.
One thing we love about Southwest Virginia is that it has a way of calling people home. Dr. Balestrieri now has a 15 month old (absolutely adorable) daughter named Belle and moving closer to her family just made sense. We are fortunate that it also meant Dr. Balestrieri was able to join our team. Now that she is back, she is able to enjoy the rolling hills and beautiful sunrises that characterize our area. She also loves the southern hospitality. “The people of Galax have really welcomed me with their arms wide open,” said Dr. Balestrieri.
The Tuck Chiropractic Clinic team has also given Dr. Balestrieri a warm welcome. “Every doctor employed by Tuck Chiropractic Clinic has helped me at some point since starting,” said Dr. Balestrieri. She elaborated, “We have certain principles we live by at Tuck Chiropractic and one of them is the benefit of collective power. I cannot think of a better team of doctors to be with to help me grow the Galax practice.”
As Dr. Balestrieri grows with our team, she hopes that the positive impact of chiropractic will continue to be felt across the region. Dr. Balestrieri said:

So many people think that chiropractic can just help with low back pain.  Hopefully, as news and social media become more available to every demographic, they will be able to see how much chiropractic can help a multitude of ailments ranging from ear infections in babies to arthritic knee pain in an older patient.

We are thankful that Dr. Balestrieri is such an advocate for chiropractic and for her patients. We are excited to have her as part of our team and look forward to working alongside her to accomplish our mission of making a positive impact on our patients and community alike.

On a Mission to Eliminate Pain and Enable Personal Wellness

By

There are people who are born knowing what they want to do in life and what they want to be when they “grow up.” Dr. Chérie Gallant had always wanted to work in healthcare, however, wasn’t quite sure where she fit it.  After shadowing a local chiropractor in her junior year of college, her career search was over; “something in me just clicked,” Dr. Gallant explained.
Dr. Gallant’s background is as colorful and as complex as she is. She was born and raised in Prince Edward Island, Canada, is a dual Canadian and US citizen, has sung competitively, plays five different instruments, has lived in four different states, and holds five advanced degrees! Her degrees in chemistry, French modern language, life sciences, sports science & rehabilitation and chiropractic medicine give her a diverse educational background and rich perspective. Dr. Gallant is confident her eclectic background has equipped her remarkably well for a career in healthcare. She explained, “the more well-rounded you are, the better prepared you are for the real world – regardless of where your career takes you.”
As part of her formal training, Dr. Gallant also completed a 10-month clinical internship at Scott Air Force Base in Belleville, Illinois, treating active duty military men and women stationed there and in the surrounding area. The amount of physical strain placed upon those who sacrifice for our country is extensive. Their gear and equipment they wear and carry in the field often weigh between 50 and 80 pounds. Carrying that amount of weight around makes the reality of pain unavoidable for servicemen and women. Dr. Gallant was profoundly honored to provide care to these brave men and women and now looks forward to continuing her work with military veterans in Southwest Virginia.
Each and every day Dr. Gallant uses her academic background combined with her years of experience to serve patients facing a variety of problems. She credits her unique academic background and meaningful experiences for her excellent problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills. For a chiropractor, these critical thinking skills are a necessity. Dr. Gallant said, “If a patient presents in such a way that differs from the norm you need to be able to think critically and creatively to properly assess the situation and treat them appropriately.”
We are very fortunate to have Dr. Gallant as part of the Tuck Chiropractic team, based out of the Fairlawn/Radford clinic.  She is excited to be practicing in the New River Valley and to provide patients with the best care possible. “As chiropractors, we should be one of people’s first ports of call instead of their last resort.  Chiropractic is extremely cost-effective and efficient at treating a variety of physical ailments and is minimally invasive,” stated Dr. Gallant. She is often saddened to see patients that have struggled for years in pain, only for their complaints to be quickly and effectively treated with chiropractic without painful and invasive procedures.  Dr. Gallant is dedicated to holistically eliminating pain and providing each patient with the encouragement and opportunity to make each day healthier than the last.

Reflections on 2016 with Dr. Ray Tuck

By

Dr. Ray Tuck with his daughter, Abi

As we reach the conclusion of 2016 and are already looking excitedly towards 2017. It seemed only fitting that we take the time to sit down with Dr. Ray Tuck and learn about the best parts of 2016 and the great things in store for 2017.
In a professional capacity, Dr. Tuck was honored with many new leadership roles that speak volumes about him as a professional and thought leader within healthcare. In February, he was elected chairman of the board for the American Chiropractic Association. Then in October, he was elected secretary of the Virginia Board of Medicine. However, what makes Dr. Tuck most proud is the support from his team, which allows him to serve in these positions that require a great deal of travel and a large time commitment. Dr. Tuck explained, “I’ve been really proud of the those who have stepped up in leadership roles to help me when I’m out of the office. We are all trying to make a difference.” He continued, “They all buy-in to what we are doing, I could not be doing this work if they weren’t doing the hard work at home.”
These leadership positions are much more than a title, there is real significance to Dr. Tuck serving in these ways. Dr. Tuck said, “The biggest thing that has driven me at both the clinic level as well as in these roles at the state level is the belief that chiropractic is a vital member of the healthcare community. Because of this belief, it is critical to be present and to contribute. In Dr. Tuck’s roles he is able to talk to other healthcare professionals, board members, legislators, and community members alike. He explained that regardless of whom he is speaking with the underlying theme and message remains constant: “Better care for our patients.”
Professionally, 2016 has been a wonderful year for Dr. Tuck and the Tuck Chiropractic team. It was also a great year for him personally. Dr. Tuck’s wife, Bonnie, and son, Nathaniel, are huge basketball fans, especially the Cleveland Cavaliers. One highlight of this year was that they were able to go to a playoff game together. Dr. Tuck also journeyed down to Austin, Texas with his daughter to attend South by Southwest (SXSW), a huge film, multimedia, and music festival. His daughter, Abi, is an emerging photographer and she was thrilled to meet National Geographic photographers at SXSW. Of course, we can’t forget to mention the photo op they also had with “Mr. Wonderful” (Kevin O’Leary from Shark Tank).
It is going to be hard to top 2016; it was a wonderful year. But like most great leaders, Dr. Tuck has already been busy looking ahead and planning for the things to come. As a team, Tuck Chiropractic has been refining their goals for 2017. One main corporate goal is to develop shared decision making within all their practices. This means doctors will intentionally work with patients in a way that encourages them to be active participants in their health and wellness journeys. In a practical sense, doctors will explain to patients what they are facing, their opportunities and options, and then facilitate decision making by the patient. The big picture goal is to help patients decide what is best for them and their care, with the expertise and experience of the doctors facilitating this decision. This is a necessary and positive healthcare paradigm and one that Tuck Chiropractic is excited to practice.
On a personal level, in 2017 Dr. Tuck is going to intentionally pursue more balance in his life, which is hard with all of his responsibilities and a busy travel schedule. However, he knows that work-life balance is a necessary part of wellness and therefore he is going to make it a priority. “I’m going to try to make sure I slow down just enough to be able to appreciate my family, my health and the people I work with,” he explained.
With much gratitude, we thank each of our patients, our community, and our supporters for a great year. It wouldn’t be possible for Dr. Tuck, or the rest of the Tuck Chiropractic team, to achieve these great milestones absent of you. We look forward to continuing to serve and pledge afresh to strive to leave a positive impact on each life we are privileged to touch.

Christmas Traditions with Dr. Ray Tuck

By

The Tuck Family: Abi, Nathaniel, Dr. Ray Tuck and Bonnie

Christmas time affords us the opportunity to pause and reflect on the things that matter most: Family, friends, our health, and the many blessings in our lives. Our family traditions produce beautiful memories, special moments, and also help shape who we are.
As a child, Dr. Ray Tuck had big Christmas celebrations. His mother is one of five siblings and if you factor in all of their children, it resulted in family gatherings of 20-30 people. There were also a lot of doctors that weren’t able to go home, so naturally, they joined in as part of the Tuck Chiropractic family.
As Dr. Tuck grew, married his beautiful bride Bonnie, and then started his own family, the traditions naturally changed. When it comes to food in the Tuck household there is a unique Christmas tradition that has developed. While many of us come to expect the same delicious meal and dishes, Dr. Tuck and his wife Bonnie use it as a time to try new recipes. Dr. Tuck loves to cook and Bonnie loves to bake so they are quite a power couple in the kitchen. They always try to make food fun and interesting.
Bonnie said, “I think for our Christmas dinner this year we are going to make homemade filled pasta.  We did this a few months back as a family and everyone seemed to have fun.” She also has her eye on an extra-special dessert, a poinsettia cake. Bonnie stumbled upon this elaborate recipe in a Southern Living magazine and felt it would be a good project to work on with Abi. She explained, “Abi worked in the bakery at a grocery store for a while, so I thought it might be something fun we could do together.”
The holidays are also a time for reflecting on the past. One of the favorite memories the Tuck family shares is the anticipation of opening gifts from Santa. Dr. Tuck made a “rule” that Abi and his son, Nathaniel, had to sit at the top of the stairs and wait to open their gifts. It wasn’t until their grandparents arrived that they could open the presents left from Santa. Dr. Tuck would make them sit there, as he teased them about how wonderful all the presents were. Bonnie recalled, “By the time they got to come down, they were dying to get things started.”  Bonnie can still remember them, sitting at the top of the stairs, with the wonder and excitement of Christmas in their eyes.
Now that their children are 20 and 16 the time spent together at the holidays is the biggest gift they receive. Their children may be older but Santa still leaves presents for them under the tree. This year they also have plans to watch classic Christmas movies on Christmas day. As Bonnie pointed out, “I think you learn to appreciate the simple things in life as you get older.  Both Ray and I lost our fathers in the last decade and with that, there is a realization that life is incredibly short. You have to appreciate the good times together when you have them.”
One other tradition that can’t be ignored in Dr. Ray Tuck’s life is the tradition of chiropractic. His father, Ray Tuck Sr., the original doctor of Tuck Chiropractic Clinic, often worked late into the night on Christmas Eve and even came back to the office to treat patients on Christmas day. As Dr. Tuck explained, “My father spent a lot of time seeing patients, and it mattered. Pain doesn’t realize what day it is—pain doesn’t take holidays.” Bonnie can recall Christmases in which Dr. Tuck followed in his father’s footsteps and made time to treat patients in need. She remembered, “One particular day we were driving to Ray’s parents’ house and we swung by the office so he could treat a patient while the kids and I waited in the car.”
This glimpse into the Christmas traditions of the Tuck family reminds us all about the beauty of the holiday spirit. The holidays allow us to reflect on what was, enjoy what is, and anticipate the special moments to come. On behalf of the entire Tuck Chiropractic team, we want to wish you a happy holiday.

It’s always fun to pause and reflect on the Christmases of the past. This year, we decided to do so by pulling together pictures from when our doctors were little tots. We recently shared this video at our company-wide Christmas party and it made us laugh, so only felt it fair to share it with you also (in hopes it’ll at least make you chuckle as you see your doctor’s picture). Enjoy this slideshow and take a moment to pause and reflect on your special Christmases of the past. Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays from the Tuck Chiropractic Clinic family to you!

Chiropractic and Insurance

By

chiropractic-insurance
One of the driving forces for the decisions we make as a chiropractic practice is you, the patient. Patient satisfaction is one of our key indicators to determine if we are accomplishing our mission of leaving a positive impact on the lives we are privileged to touch. We know that one issue heavy on the minds of many of our patients is the rising cost of healthcare.
While not all chiropractors take insurance, for us it is an absolute must. To meet the needs of our patients we must make it cost effective and it must also honor their time. By taking insurance from carriers like Anthem, Aetna, Cigna, and Medicare we are ensuring we honor the financial aspect of health care. We also know it is necessary that our staff help patients navigate the waters of chiropractic and insurance because at times it can be cumbersome and confusing.
If you find yourself with insurance questions we invite you to contact the office most convenient to you. Reaching out is the first step towards a healthier lifestyle. If you reach out with a question you can expect a timely answer from a real person. You won’t get passed through a never-ending phone tree directory. You will interact with someone that works within our clinic offices, who has received training on insurance coverage and billing, and who genuinely wants to answer your question.
We are thankful that our patients report 97% satisfaction with our services. From the information we have gathered associated with this rating, we have learned that patient satisfaction is related to results and also to the convenience of obtaining care. Convenience factors include flexible appointment times, multiple clinic locations, and providing administrative services, such as insurance billing. We are thankful for our wonderful patients that give us feedback, which allows us to continuously improve.
One documented reason that people do not make choices that support good wellness is lack of convenience. When making the healthy choice is also the hassle-free choice we know our patients are more likely to follow through. Our hope is that by accepting insurance and billing insurance companies on our patients’ behalf we are removing a barrier that would prevent them from seeking the best possible decision for their health and well-being. We want to be a healthcare partner with our patients in every sense; from the adjustments we provide to the patient care from our support staff. We hope to soon have the opportunity to partner with you and help you live a pain-free life.

Team Training For the Win

By

tuck-training-win
It has been said that if you are determined to learn, no one can stop you. We believe that quote embodies the collective Tuck Chiropractic mindset. We see ourselves as perpetual students, eager to continue the process of learning. A large portion of the education we seek is related to improving as physicians and better clinical practices. However, we also seek to learn and grow as professionals and people in general. We want to have better customer service skills, hone in on our passions and skill sets, and energize ourselves through group training sessions. Since this is so important to us, we have made it a regular practice to host a monthly company training session.
Our training sessions cover a wide variety of topics and are largely driven by the interests of our team. We have listened to the interests of our people from across the various clinic locations to determine what they feel is most beneficial. Some of the topics include health and nutrition information, communication etiquette, tips for better patient interactions, and personality assessments. It could be argued that some of the topics we discuss fall outside the realm of chiropractic. We would politely disagree. Much like wellness, it is important that all the parts of the Tuck Chiropractic team are functioning at their best, so the team as a whole is stronger for it. Helping our staff develop in healthy and positive directions is good for them as individuals and also for our collective team, it is a win-win.
Tuck Chiropractic is also unique in that it is 11 different clinic locations all part of the same company, driven by the same mission and core values. Keeping all clinics interacting and on a mission is important. Gathering as a team regularly is a key step in ensuring this consistent patient-centered focus. As Missy Turner, with our Human Resources Department, explained, “I personally enjoy the camaraderie that I see when we gather together. I also enjoy watching those individuals grow and step into more active roles as they themselves begin to share with others, train others, and lead others. That’s what it’s all about.”
One recent training session, from July 2016, featured world-class athlete, Charles Clark. Charles didn’t just speak to our team; he inspired our team to continue our mission to positively impact other people. He encouraged us to be bold and shed the fear that holds us back from achieving goals. He said, “Life is too short to let fear contain you.” It was an encouragement to us all to hear his remarks. Charles provided us with a great reminder of why we all entered this profession in the first place: we have a purpose to help and serve others. He also had us break up into small groups and share ideas about what it means to preserve the integrity of the team. Pausing our work days to think about the importance of sharing an encouraging word, clarifying expectations, or communicating clearly were all good reminders about how the small things have a big impact.
“Prioritizing time to invest in our most valuable resource, our people, is really important. Through these monthly trainings, we are creating an environment where a culture of excellence and high standards are the norm,” explained Missy. If we tell our team we want them to grow and develop then we know we must set the example by creating opportunities to do exactly that. The reality is, the better we are as individuals the better we are as a team. The better we are as a team the better we can serve our patients and leave a positive impact on their lives.

Dr. Matthis: Why Chiropractic?

By

Dr. Matthis at his clinic office

Dr. Lee Matthis received his Degree from the Palmer College of Chiropractic and has been practicing with Tuck Chiropractic for almost a decade!

He isn’t sure exactly where the interest came from but at 6 years old Dr. Matthis (just “Lee” at that time) was certain that someday he would be a general and vascular surgeon. He supposes that his desire to become a surgeon was in part because of the outdoorsman hobbies he had growing up. He was born and raised in Kenansville, North Carolina (“God’s Country”) located between Raleigh and Wilmington. He spent a lot of time hunting and fishing. In his family the expectation was “if you kill it, you grill it.” Matthis assumes that mantra played a role in his intrigue with anatomy and physiology.
When Matthis was in 6th grade, he had the opportunity to explore his desired career tract first hand. He had a family friend that was a surgeon and allowed him to go on post-op and pre-op rounds. He absolutely loved it! A week or so later Matthis came back and scrubbed in for surgery. He had a laser focus on this career path but painful curveball was thrown at him by life, derailing his dream.
One of Matthis’ biggest champions in life was his grandmother, affectionately known as “Meme.” She lived only 5 miles down the road from him and was a huge part of his life. She always had a big smile on her face—especially when she was dancing the Charleston (which she did often). When Matthis was 17 he lost his Meme, while she was having a “routine” surgical procedure. This exposed him to the shadow side of surgery and caused him to take pause and carefully evaluate his career aspirations.
The loss of his Meme was staggering and derailed Matthis from his dream. He still planned to pursue premed in undergraduate school with a biology degree but felt a bit lost when trying to envision his end goal. Sometimes it is the little things that have the biggest impact on our lives and provide redirection. For Matthis is was a little tweak to his knee.
Matthis has always been active, and in high school he played baseball and also worked in construction. He managed to tweak his knee enough that it was bothersome and interfering with his work and play. His mom referred him to a chiropractor and Matthis got his first adjustment. As Matthis explained, “The chiropractor adjusted my knee and I thought it was pretty cool. She then told me I would be good at it and gave me a book. The book talked a lot about anatomy and physiology and I was drawn to it.” He also loved that Chiropractic is a history rich profession. Matthis elaborated, “I did not have a miraculous experience with a chiropractor. I did not go in lame and come out walking. The improvement was a mild improvement on my quality of life.” That self-described “mild” improvement left a lasting impression. Matthis realized that he wanted to be part of a profession that allows people to move from living mediocre lives to expressive lives, without surgical intervention. This is his goal as a doctor of chiropractic and why he loves what he does so much.
The journey of Matthis becoming a chiropractor is one laced with joy and intrigue but also contains threads of grief, all of which can be powerful motivators. Matthis has now been with Tuck Chiropractic Clinic for nearly 10 years and is a source of enthusiasm for our doctors, as well as the profession of chiropractic. He is a thought leader for advocating for the benefits of chiropractic care and he is also a lot of fun to follow on Twitter. He lives a life wide open—embracing each day and each moment. The answer to “why chiropractic?” for Matthis is a powerful, compelling, and personal story. It speaks volumes about the ability of chiropractic to leave a positive impact on lives—both patients and doctors alike.

Dr. Ray Tuck's Story

By

Dr. Tuck

Dr. Tuck is from Pulaski, Virginia and has been practicing chiropractic since 1998.

It may not surprise you to hear that Dr. Ray Tuck is a very busy man. As the President and lead doctor of Tuck Chiropractic Clinic, he divides his time between serving patients, serving with various professional organizations, and serving the local community. It’s possible you’ve run into him at a Virginia Tech Hokie Game or maybe you are a patient that has benefited from his expertise and skill as a chiropractor. No matter how well you know Dr. Tuck, we thought you might enjoy a deeper look at who is and what he is all about.
Which Tuck Clinic do you work at?
I work with patients out of our Christiansburg office but also spend time at the corporate office working.
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Dreamer, service-oriented.
What is a typical workday like for you?
I get things started bright and early with a workout at 5:30am. After that I head to the office to start my workday. On Monday and Tuesday I see patients. The rest of my week varies quite a bit. I serve on the American Chiropractic Association and the Virginia Board of Medicine; I travel a fair amount serving with these organizations.
What is your favorite part of your job?
That’s an easy one! Helping others achieve their goals.
If you had to live on a deserted island and could only bring 3 items, what would you bring—and why?
A chess set (to keep my mind occupied), some swim trunks (to swim in), and my wife (well…).
What’s it like being the only chiropractor on the Virginia board of medicine?
It has been awesome to work with providers of all backgrounds with the goal of patients in mind. I am truly treated as any other provider, even though I’m the only chiropractor on the board.
How does collaborating with other health care providers (such as those on the ACA or Board of Medicine) lead to better care for your patients?
The reality is that all of us in healthcare have a responsibility to keep the patient’s goals at the forefront of our minds. Globally, it really comes down to three things: First, achieving the best possible outcomes for the patient’s condition. Second, ensuring the patient feels very satisfied with their experience. Third, providing care in the most economical manner. The only way this can be done is through the collaboration of all healthcare providers. This is being discussed by policy makers, insurance carriers, and by our patients.
What are essential qualities for a chiropractor to possess?
A chiropractor must always remember that they are there to serve their patients. Their role is to help guide them through our current healthcare system enabling them to obtain their health goals. The chiropractor must work diligently for the best possible outcome, patient satisfaction, and economical treatments. It really is all about the patient!
What inspired you to become a chiropractor?
Witnessing first-hand the ability of chiropractic to change lives for the better. When I was 19, I asked my father for a job in one of his clinics. While at one of the clinics I saw how he helped a severely acute patient. In fact, this fellow was a copy machine repairman who experienced lower back pain after lifting a copier. His injury was so bad that he had to be carried into the clinic. We stayed late that night working with him and I saw him walk out. That was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. The man was made well without drugs or surgery. I was hooked and knew I wanted to be part of a profession that could improve the lives of others in this way.
What do you love most about the New River Valley?
I love that this is home. I grew up in Pulaski, earned a degree from Radford University, and now serve patients in the New River Valley at our Christiansburg office.
What do you do for fun?
I garden on my land, play with my old cars, and cook for my family.
What motivates you to stay well?
I want to be in top performance for all the people that depend on me—my family, friends, patients and colleagues.
What is your favorite inspirational quote?
My favorite quote was said by Zig Zigler, “You can get anything you want if you help enough people get what they want!” It points out that you first must serve others and trust your needs will be met in the process. If you put others first and ensure their success it will result in personal success.
