Jennifer's Story
When a migraine hits, getting through life can be near impossible. In addition to being an excruciating headache, migraines are often accompanied by reduced field of vision, dizziness, severe light sensitivity, nausea and vomiting. Take a moment to imagine having the worst migraine of your life. Now imagine that same migraine is happening while you are standing at the front of a classroom full of 5th graders, trying to teach them. That is where Jennifer found herself time and time again.
For years Jennifer has struggled with debilitating migraines. They would strike and she would end up in bed for an entire day. Over the years she saw various doctors and ended up on medication, in an effort to make it possible to live the life she dreamed of. Jennifer is extremely active. Aside from keeping up with busy 5th graders all day long she also instructs fitness classes and is very involved with her church youth group and YoungLife. She is also a big Bachelor fan and never misses watching an episode with her friends, unless a migraine strikes. She is outgoing and energetic—too busy embracing life to contend with migraines!
This past January Jennifer decided that something had to change; the frequency of her migraines had increased. She explained, “I was trying a preventative medication and I really wanted to go off that medication.” After meeting with multiple doctors, and not feeling like she was ever really heard and understood, she ended up in our Bedford Clinic meeting with Dr. LaBarbera. The collaborative aspect of Jennifer’s appointment with Dr. LaBarbera really stood out to her. She remembered, “When I first came to him and explained the issues I was having, he listened to me and developed a plan.”
Moving forward, Jennifer gets regular weekly adjustments. The results have been phenomenal. Jennifer is no longer on medication and the intensity of her headaches has diminished. She explained, “My headaches are coming less frequently and are not as severe so I am able to deal with them if they do occur. Before chiropractic treatments, a migraine meant a day in bed for me and now I am able to at least function.” For a woman with a busy life—and lots of young people that depend on her—this new normal is a welcome change.
An aspect of our patient care that is especially valuable to Jennifer is our willingness to fit in unexpected appointments—because we know migraines (and pain in general) don’t follow a polite schedule. On one such visit, Jennifer’s husband, Cory, had to drive her. The migraine was in-progress and was too intense for her to safely operate her vehicle. It allowed him the opportunity to get a first-hand look at what the treatments were going to be like, and the person responsible for administering the treatments. Jennifer recalled that appointment:
Dr. A.J. brought my husband in and showed him the x-rays and told him about our plan for treatment. When we left, my husband said, “I feel like he really wants to help you!” That was very different from the many different doctors I have seen regarding my migraines over the last several years.
We especially love how Jennifer has integrated chiropractic adjustments with her overall wellness plan. She has a daily workout, makes eating healthy a regular habit, and gets a weekly adjustment. She understands that her health can’t be isolated to just dealing with headaches, just exercise, or just a healthy diet. It is when chiropractic care is aligned with all other aspects of health that the most positive impact is felt.

Pregnancy and Chiropractic: Savanah's Story
It was Tuesday, March 21 and Savanah felt miserable. She was 38 weeks pregnant and experiencing severe back pain. While she knew there was a chance she was experiencing back labor—she just wasn’t quite sure. Savanah reached out to the Vinton Tuck Chiropractic Clinic 15 minutes before close and asked for an appointment. Dr. Smith gladly saw Savanah and gave her a much-needed adjustment.
The relief brought about by the adjustment was so successful that the pain disappeared and Savanah worried she wasn’t really in labor after all. However, much to Savanah’s delight she was. Sweet baby Vera was born at 1:01 am on March 22, less than 8 hours after her adjustment with Dr. Smith. We love this story and the important role chiropractic played in Savanah’s positive birthing experience and Vera’s safe arrival. She told us, “I don’t feel that my labor would have been the same had I not been adjusted that day.”
Savanah has a “hands full, heart full” kind of life. Her big and blended family has a total of 6 children, 4 of which she carried in her belly and 2 of which she carried in her heart. Another fun fact—5 of the 6 children are girls! Vera is the youngest and absolutely adored by her siblings.
Chiropractic care during pregnancy was an integral part of 3 of Savanah’s 4 birthing experiences. She first sought chiropractic care when she was “quite miserable” toward the end of her second pregnancy. It was the suggestion of her midwife, Crystal Fink, with Breath of Life Midwifery, that brought her to the Bedford Tuck Chiropractic Clinic. Over the course of her second, third, and fourth pregnancies chiropractic played a key role in Savanah’s comfort and great birthing experiences.
She has received treatments from various Tuck Chiropractic doctors in a variety of locations, based on where she was living at the time and general convenience. Regardless of the doctor or the office she had positive experiences that made her pregnancies more comfortable and promoted better health for her and her babies. In fact, Savanah described her prenatal adjustments as, “the most exciting event on my calendar during pregnancy!”
Chiropractic adjustments not only relieve back pain associated with pregnancy but as demonstrated by Savanah’s story, chiropractic treatments also relax the pelvis to promote a better labor and delivery process. For two of her pregnancies, Savanah gave birth the same day she was adjusted.
Savanah is soon to be licensed as a midwife with Breath of Life Midwifery. She explained to us, “We recommend that every pregnant woman receive chiropractic care throughout pregnancy and especially last trimester.” In addition to easing pain associated with pregnancy, she points out the labor and delivery benefits. Savanah said, “We love to send clients with malpositioned babies to receive chiropractic care because the adjustment realigns everything allowing the baby to get in a better position to make pregnancy, labor, and delivery easier for the mother, baby, and birth attendant.” We love how Savanah is an advocate for her health, the health of her children, and also the women she will soon serve as a midwife.

Dr. Ray Tuck's Story

Dr. Tuck is from Pulaski, Virginia and has been practicing chiropractic since 1998.
It may not surprise you to hear that Dr. Ray Tuck is a very busy man. As the President and lead doctor of Tuck Chiropractic Clinic, he divides his time between serving patients, serving with various professional organizations, and serving the local community. It’s possible you’ve run into him at a Virginia Tech Hokie Game or maybe you are a patient that has benefited from his expertise and skill as a chiropractor. No matter how well you know Dr. Tuck, we thought you might enjoy a deeper look at who is and what he is all about.
Which Tuck Clinic do you work at?
I work with patients out of our Christiansburg office but also spend time at the corporate office working.
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Dreamer, service-oriented.
What is a typical workday like for you?
I get things started bright and early with a workout at 5:30am. After that I head to the office to start my workday. On Monday and Tuesday I see patients. The rest of my week varies quite a bit. I serve on the American Chiropractic Association and the Virginia Board of Medicine; I travel a fair amount serving with these organizations.
What is your favorite part of your job?
That’s an easy one! Helping others achieve their goals.
If you had to live on a deserted island and could only bring 3 items, what would you bring—and why?
A chess set (to keep my mind occupied), some swim trunks (to swim in), and my wife (well…).
What’s it like being the only chiropractor on the Virginia board of medicine?
It has been awesome to work with providers of all backgrounds with the goal of patients in mind. I am truly treated as any other provider, even though I’m the only chiropractor on the board.
How does collaborating with other health care providers (such as those on the ACA or Board of Medicine) lead to better care for your patients?
The reality is that all of us in healthcare have a responsibility to keep the patient’s goals at the forefront of our minds. Globally, it really comes down to three things: First, achieving the best possible outcomes for the patient’s condition. Second, ensuring the patient feels very satisfied with their experience. Third, providing care in the most economical manner. The only way this can be done is through the collaboration of all healthcare providers. This is being discussed by policy makers, insurance carriers, and by our patients.
What are essential qualities for a chiropractor to possess?
A chiropractor must always remember that they are there to serve their patients. Their role is to help guide them through our current healthcare system enabling them to obtain their health goals. The chiropractor must work diligently for the best possible outcome, patient satisfaction, and economical treatments. It really is all about the patient!
What inspired you to become a chiropractor?
Witnessing first-hand the ability of chiropractic to change lives for the better. When I was 19, I asked my father for a job in one of his clinics. While at one of the clinics I saw how he helped a severely acute patient. In fact, this fellow was a copy machine repairman who experienced lower back pain after lifting a copier. His injury was so bad that he had to be carried into the clinic. We stayed late that night working with him and I saw him walk out. That was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. The man was made well without drugs or surgery. I was hooked and knew I wanted to be part of a profession that could improve the lives of others in this way.
What do you love most about the New River Valley?
I love that this is home. I grew up in Pulaski, earned a degree from Radford University, and now serve patients in the New River Valley at our Christiansburg office.
What do you do for fun?
I garden on my land, play with my old cars, and cook for my family.
What motivates you to stay well?
I want to be in top performance for all the people that depend on me—my family, friends, patients and colleagues.
What is your favorite inspirational quote?
My favorite quote was said by Zig Zigler, “You can get anything you want if you help enough people get what they want!” It points out that you first must serve others and trust your needs will be met in the process. If you put others first and ensure their success it will result in personal success.

Partnering with Jen for Health, Happiness, and High Kicks

Jen, a Tuck Chiropractic patient, has found that one key to her overall happiness, health, and success is staying on top of her joint and back health through her regular chiropractic treatments.
One of the highlights of working in healthcare is the opportunity to develop relationships with patients from all walks of life. Every patient that walks into one of our 11 Tuck Chiropractic locations has a unique story to tell. At our Bedford location, Jen is one of our regulars, seeing Dr. A.J LaBarbera to maintain a happy, healthy spine and joints. What initially began as a single chiropractic visit eight years ago, to treat sinus problems and lower back pain, has transformed into a long-lasting relationship. Not only are we able to consistently help her maintain overall joint and back health but we have also relished the chance to support her in other aspects of her life.
Jen has a job in retail that requires heavy lifting, which is quite strenuous on her back and joints. Even though Jen makes the effort to lift in a safe and proper way, odd movements are inevitable as she gets the job done—and these movements can leave her back and joints feeling aggravated. Jen explained how she has managed to overcome these work challenges with chiropractic care, she said, “Regular adjustments, along with various exercises that I have been taught, keep me able to do my job.”
The benefits Jen has experienced due to chiropractic treatments don’t end at work, though. Jen likes to work hard and play even harder—she is a martial artist. She explained how she feels consistent adjustments have helped her to participate in this sport and improve her performance, “As a martial artist, proper alignment allows for better quality of movement. I’ve noticed that when I am doing well and not in a lot of pain, that I can get my kicks up much higher and can achieve greater degrees of flexibility.” She has found that one key to her overall happiness, health, and success is staying on top of her joint and back health through her regular chiropractic treatments.
According to Jen, seeing Dr. LaBarbera. for adjustments is a major contributor to how great she feels and her ability to stay active both at and after work. But more than that, Jen knows that Dr. LaBarbera genuinely cares about her overall health. Dr. LaBarbera explained, “Being a true advocate for our patients is how we can ensure that they get the care they need; whether it is within our group, with another provider, or even another health care discipline altogether. This collaborative effort really helps to resolve patients’ issues and also assists them in meeting their health goals.” Jen also talked about Dr. A.J.’s advocacy on her behalf; she explained, “I had an issue with foot pain a few years ago. He referred me to a podiatrist to treat me because the pain had lingered on. If he determines that a referral is best for a patient, he isn’t afraid to go that route to help them heal.”
Another thing the Bedford team loves about Jen is how she shares her passions with us. We all enjoy catching up with her when she comes by the office. “At one point, Dr. Matthis answered questions on chiropractic, while I was working on a Biology paper,” Jen told us. She continued, “Dr. Keene also took time to tell me about Athletic Training, as I have been looking at possible college majors. Earlier this year, Dr. A.J. came to Super Kicks Martial Arts to discuss goals with our students.” We value the way that our relationship with Jen transcends the clinical environment into everyday living, interests, and aspirations.
Working with Jen is a joy and the Tuck Chiropractic team is thankful that she trusts us with her health care. We also appreciate that she welcomes us into other areas of her life, allowing us to understand how our chiropractic treatments fit into the bigger picture of who she is. Jen’s story is a great encouragement to continue striving to leave a positive impact on every life we touch. Thanks, Jen. We hope Tuck Chiropractic can continue to help you achieve your health goals!

New Research Shows Why Chiropractic Care is So Effective
The first Chiropractic adjustment was given in 1895 by D.D. Palmer. Chiropractic care has been achieving tremendous results with patient care. Unfortunately, until recent years Chiropractors have only been able to theorize why so many patients improved with their care.
Initially, Chiropractors stated that when a bone of the spine or vertebrae misaligned it put abnormal amounts of pressure on the nerve that it was designed to protect. Essentially a hard bone was pinching a soft nerve. That pressure prevented the nerve from working properly and thus caused symptoms or unease in the body. The theory was later proved to be accurate when it was discovered that it only took the weight of a dime to alter the function of that nerve. Thus, when a Chiropractor would deliver an adjustment, they would reduce the pressure on the nerve and the body would begin to heal.
Next, Chiropractors theorized that spinal joints could move out of position and scar tissue would develop around the joints thereby attracting fluid (swelling) and again would pressure the nerve. This pressure would generally account for pain and immobility and is one of the main reasons why people visit a chiropractor today. When a Chiropractic adjustment was delivered it would reduce the swelling, improve the mobility of the joint and decrease the pressure on the nerve. Again, the body would begin to heal.
Today, new research demonstrates how the loss of the central nervous system’s ability to adapt to changes in your environment and recover has become the critical issue in achieving wellness and staying healthy. The role of Chiropractic in improving the function of the central nervous system is the key to the benefits of care. A series of EEG’s, which are specialized tests that measure brain waves, demonstrated how a Chiropractic adjustment can alter the nature of the brain wave and allow the nervous system to essentially “restart.” These new findings explain why Chiropractic care is so effective in helping patients that present with a range of symptoms from headaches/migraines to ear aches and indigestion.
