Shoulder Pain Treatment and Relief

Patient-Focused Chiropractic Treatment of Shoulder Pain

The experienced doctors here at Tuck Chiropractic Clinic offer safe, noninvasive, and hands-on treatment options for those experiencing shoulder pain, including isolating the source of the pain and offering therapeutic treatment to improve shoulder strength and flexibility.

Anatomy of the Shoulder

The upper arm bone (humerus), shoulder blade (scapula), and the collarbone (clavicle) make up the shoulder. A variety of muscles and tendons keep the arm positioned in the shoulder socket, and tissues known as the rotator cuff cover the top of the humerus, attaching it to the scapula.

Together, this combination of bones, joints, tendons, and muscles allows for a wide range of motion in the shoulder, the most mobile joint in the human body. But injury or overuse can lead to painful problems in this complex structure. After lower back pain, shoulder pain is the second most common cause of occupational injury claims, according to a 2002 report in the Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association.

What Are Some Causes of Shoulder Pain?

Shoulder pain can be the result of an injury to the joint itself, or can stem from pain originating in another part of the body, known as referred pain. Shoulder problems central to the joint and surrounding area can include:

  • Bursitis: a painful inflammation and swelling of the bursa sacs between the rotator cuff and the shoulder blade
  • Tendinitis: acute or chronic wear on the tendons in the shoulder that connect muscle to bone
  • Tendon tear: a pulling-away of the tendon from the bone due to sudden injury or degenerative changes in the tendon over time
  • Impingement: when the head of the humerus applies pressure to soft tissue as the arm is raised, sometimes leading to bursitis, tendinitis, and even a rotator cuff tear
  • Osteoarthritis: wear and tear, infection, or inflammation of the lining of the joint related to sports or work injuries
  • Fracture: bones of the shoulder commonly occur after a fall in elderly patients or an injury in younger patients

Chiropractic Treatment for Shoulder Pain

Effective treatment is based on an accurate diagnosis of your shoulder pain, which may include an analysis of your medical history, current medical conditions, medications, and lifestyle.

Chiropractors typically use a variety of soft-tissue approaches to treat and manage shoulder pain, including:

  • Cryotherapy: the application of ice or cold packs to the injured area to reduce blood flow and relieve pain, swelling, and inflammation
  • Mobilization: a gradual physical adjustment of soft tissue or joints to reduce discomfort, increase range of motion, or to isolate the source of the pain and restore normal function
  • Manipulation: the application of controlled force to the joint.
  • Ischemic compression: the slow and progressive application of gentle pressure over trigger points in the shoulder muscle that can result in significant improvement of shoulder pain, according to a 2013 study.

This multifaceted approach allows for patient input to help us provide an accurate diagnosis. It has been shown to be effective, particularly when done in conjunction with an appropriate exercise program.
